He asks her that she wants a temple there on the plain. Let him tell the Bishop. And he adds: «As a Mother, there I will show my loving clemency for all those who request my protection. And I will hear your tears and your pleas to give you comfort and relief. Because I am your compassionate Mother».Fray Juan de Zumárraga, the first Bishop of Mexico, of the Franciscan Order, kindly receives the Indian. But he tells her that he needs proof to be sure that what he tells her is true. As a signal, the Virgin tells the Indian to go up the hill, pick some roses and take them to the Bishop. It was December. Juan Diego did not hesitate. There were the roses. He collected them in the cloak and took them to the Bishop as a sign that She wanted a temple there. The tilma, was the name in "Náhuatl", the language that Juan Diego spoke, of the poncho or cape used by the poor Mexican Indians, knotted on his shoulder. When Juan Diego is in front of the Bishop and drops the tilma where he was carrying the roses, they fell to the ground. Since it was not the time for roses, the Bishop understood that the sign was true. The image of the Virgin appeared stamped on the tilma. This happened on December 12, 1531. The excited Bishop took Juan Diego's cloak in his hands and placed it in his oratory. Later he moved it to the main church of the city to be venerated by the devout crowd. This tilma or ayate with the image of the Virgin was later taken to a hermitage that was built on Mount Tepeyac. This temporary hermitage of straw and adobe was built in two weeks. On December 26, 1531, a solemn procession, with the Bishop and all the authorities, transferred Juan Diego's cloak to the small sanctuary that housed the relic until 1557. The second Bishop of Mexico, Don Alonso de Montúfar, a Dominican, built another hermitage which was in service until 1622. After that, seven temples have followed one another, up to the current basilica that was dedicated on February 11, 1976 with a capacity for ten thousand people.
