(Shanghai Animation Film Studio Co. - SAFS).The watch celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Chinese animated film, TheMonkey King: Uproar in Heaven, which was produced by the Wan brothers and originally released by SAFS in 1961, during the Second Golden Age of the Chinese film industry.The Monkey King, or Sun Wukong in Mandarin Chinese, is a legendary mythical figure from the 16th century classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. The story tells how Sun Wukong, a monkey born from stone, gains supernatural powers before rebelling against heaven. In the story, the Monkey King acquires a red pillar with golden tips which he shrinks into a staff with which to fight his enemies and injustices against him, creating the "riot" described in the title. Today, the Monkey King is an icon of Chinese culture recognized throughout the world.The challenge of this delightful collaboration was to reimagine a well-known and culturally significant story in a watch. Clocks offer a small and largely static canvas: how to show the furious movement of a superpowered monkey in such a small space?Reimagine a popular and culturally significant story on a watchOris designers saw an opportunity in the Monkey King's staff, a magical red and gold pillar that he uses to defeat his enemies. The second hand turned into that red gun with gold tips. To express how quickly the Monkey King spins in battle, the designers abstracted the shape, adding blue flashes that repeat and diminish in size and color to suggest constant movement.The effect is intoxicating, creating a tangible yet otherworldly impression of a rapidly spinning baton, which becomes almost audible as you look at it.Beyond its fun and unique aesthetic, the Sun Wukong Limited Edition carries the same hallmarks of quality and sleek silhouette that the Aquis Date has become famous for.It has a 41.5mm stainless steel case and a unidirectional rotating bezel that is fitted with an ocean blue ceramic bezel that plays an appreciable role in presenting the unique character of the watch. The crown guards, screw-down crown and stainless steel bracelet with deployment clasp all serve to remind us of the watch's impeccable underwater credentials: as indicated by the dial, the watch is water resistant to 30 bar (300 meters). Inside there is an automatic mechanism that gives the watch its central "rotating" sweep seconds hand.To complete the story, the case back is engraved with Sun Wukong's head and his staff, while the same illustration on the dial is repeated on the special presentation case.
